Poster Symposium 2019 - Report

Poster Symposium 2019 - Report

On Friday, December the 13th the annual poster-symposium was held as part of the ITSC practical.

After the student arrived and had the chance to enjoy the snacks provided by the organisers, Professor Dr.Petersen held a short speech, where he highlighted the importance of communications in science and told a few stories of his own experiences on this topic.
After the speech everyone had the chance to have a look at the presented posters and ask a few questions about the presented Material. Our team had the chance to interview some of the participants as well as some professors and find out what their thoughts on the poster-symposium were. Professor Dr.Petersen said that this event gives the students a great opportunity to practice, because in his opinion a lot of work actually goes into making and presenting a poster. Professor Dr. Plumeré explained that the poster-symposium is like a real conference, where scientific materials are presented. Professor Dr. Apfel mentioned that its quite interesting to see what kind of research other groups are doing on this faculty. He also made a comparison to a real scientific conference and said that the structure is similar, yet the level is still not the same, because of the missing experience of the students. He also said that the atmosphere at the symposium was friendly and welcoming.
Our team asked some of the presenting master-students, everyone we asked said that the poster-symposium gave them a great opportunity to see what different possibilities for research there are on the faculty, a few were a little bit disappointed that some groups were less represented than others.
The visitors of the symposium we interviewed were also grateful for the opportunity to see all the different faculties presented, giving them the chance to explore the possible in-dept practical places, they were also fond of the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, motivating them to ask the presenters many question on the research they would not ask a professor.
At noon the winners, chosen by the poster-symposium team, were announced and congratulated. Sarah Bimmermann received the first place for her poster on the “Mechanochemical Scholl Reaction as Synthethic Approach to Porous Polymers”, Kevinjeorjios Pellumbi received the second place for his poster titled “Effect of the S/Se exchange on the HER and CO2RR activity of Fe/Ni-Pentlandites” and Philipp Meyer received the third place for his poster on “Aggregation and Dissociation of HCl in Methanol at sub-Kelvin temperatures in Superfluid Helium Clusters”. The winning posters are shown below.
In general, we received mostly positive feedback on the poster-symposium and even though it was an unlucky Friday, everything went great.
We thank all participants as well as Professor Plumeré and Professor Petersen, and special thanks to the poster-symposium team, who organised this event.
